Lately, many designers have been looking at past eras, interpreting past fashion. This is a fascinating activity. Creating new images that involve elements of historical costumes, you can notice that many of them look unusual and even fantastic. However, more and more designers are turning to the fashion of the future, a futuristic style is developing.

Futurism in fashion as a trend, it is commonly believed, began its birth in the 60s and 70s of the last century. The first spacecraft went into space, the first astronauts. It was at this time that many looked to stellar space as the future of humanity. Designers also took an interest in “exploring” galaxies, creating new shapes and using modern materials.
André Courregue not only shortened skirts but also began using new synthetic fabrics. The Space Age wave was picked up by Paco Rabanne and Pierre Cardin. There were films with a space theme, which, if you look back today, are very funny and naive, but at that time, for example, the film “Barbarella” became very popular, not only because of the idea of the director Roger Vadim and the sexy heroine but also because of the costumes that Paco Raban invented.
The designer used unusual materials to create fantastic outfits, and he worked with a soldering iron and metal plates, with scissors and paper.
In the ’60s, Paco Rabanne’s suits reflected the space wave and the sexual revolution at the same time. Paco Rabanne became at the forefront of futuristic fashion. Cardin’s girls wore brightly colored trapeze dresses and patent leather knee-high boots.
In the eighties, the futuristic theme entered somewhat differently already, with huge pointed shoulders, “acid” shades, jumpsuits, and large, bright plastic accessories.
With the rise of the Internet, a new space era began with Thierry Mugler, Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, …Iris van Herpen, who continues the futuristic theme in both space and the ocean today.
Ringlets, silvery jumpsuits, plate dresses, holographic outfits, sparkling shoes, flying saucers, …-the theme of futurism continues, and every year we become the owners of more and more fantastic ideas. Gradually, science fiction becomes a special and independent style, allowing us to look into the future.
Fashion critics, and fashionistas too, want to see something special in the futuristic collections, connected not only with the conquest of outer space.

Varieties of futurism in fashion wear
Futurist Minimalism, based on the unisex style.
Surrealist Futurism.. Here is everything that is hard to make your everyday closet out of, except for the runway or music shows.
Retro Futurism. Think of Pierre Cardin’s or Paco Raban’s dresses and suits.
Today the futuristic style allows you to look not only into outer space, but you can also plunge into the depths of the ocean or imagine the architectural structures of the city of the future and consider there something special extraordinary or just create things that hypertrophy individual body parts – with huge shoulders and pockets, headgear, sleeves or massive shoes…

Futuristic style, in any form, can be recognized by the following signs:
- Intricate in character: broken or flowing lines;
- geometric print;
- abstract print with elements of outer space;
- a combination of bright colors reminiscent of the paintings of abstractionists;
- Innovative materials, including vinyl, plastic, and other synthetic varieties;
- metallized fabrics, with a sheen or molten metal effect;
- Metal and plastic decor;
In addition to all this, the original makeup and hairstyle.

Basic rules for creating a futuristic look
One of the easiest and most accessible rules that everyone can use is the palette. Emphasis is made on steel, cobalt, gold, silver, platinum shades. Black and white colors are possible. However, bright shades, namely acid characters, which were in the 80’s of the last century, will also help to create an image of a girl from another planet.
Accessories. They can be unusually shaped, quite large, with original lines.
Shoes Also solid, with a high platform or heel.
Jewelry original shape plus unusual decorations in the outfit…

To make up in a futuristic style, a little glitter or a few bright touches are enough. Excessive coloring is possible only in evening gowns, and then only when you create a carnival look.
Stylish examples from the latest collections of famous designers
We can say that the theme of futurism in the collections from season to season is shown on the catwalk, where not only space is considered. Annakiki’s latest collections feature images on the theme of futurism in black, white and gray shades. Some of the images emphasize broad and pointed shoulders, while others have flowing, streamlined shapes. At the same time, the futuristic image is enhanced by an op-art print or metallic sheen of the material.

All of their creations have always embodied a passion for the Baroque era and retro films of the 50s and 60s. The collections of women’s clothing were full of lace and corsets, bright colors and large intricate patterns. Each Dolce & Gabbana collection is luxurious and extraordinarily feminine. Often the designers discover something new for the fashion world; they do not follow trends, they create them. And the latest collections are also marked by innovation, but how? The future of humanity, as they see it.
This time, too, Olivier Rousteing, creative director of the Balmain brand, decided to fantasize about the future. In the collection silver pants, skirts and jackets alternate with flight suits, aviator jackets, dresses of parachute silk, fluorescent shades with khaki color. Space theme is reflected not only in the collection’s elements, but also in the decorations.

To create a casual look, you can use things with the simplest cut, but they should be either metallic shades or made of innovative materials. This can be a dress or vest, a down jacket, jumpsuit or jacket, as well as original accessories. Well reflect the futuristic direction white outfits with an asymmetrical cut.

Designers are people with immense imagination, and looking into the future is the most interesting game for them. It is the futuristic style that gives them enormous scope for creating images that hover in their imagination.

We are now living in a time of global change. The pandemic is pushing businesses to go online en masse. Space is becoming more accessible, no longer by states, but by private companies launching rockets into orbit, and soon planning to conquer other planets. There are also new technologies for making materials, and more and more people are thinking about preserving the planet. All this and many other processes in the world are pushing fashion to develop the trend for futurism.
